B’s story – asylum seeker supports

The Asylum Seeker and Refugee Assistance program led by Communify currently supports over 300 asylum seekers with emergency relief, individual and family support, mental and physical health, employment and housing supports.

Many of the asylum seekers we support have endured significant trauma after experiencing war, persecution and genocide in the countries they have fled from. In attempting to build a new life here in Australia, they face ongoing hardship and unique obstacles to overcome. Yet our staff are constantly inspired by the courage and resilience demonstrated by these people, despite the challenges they face.

B's story

The ASRA support team met B and his wife and two children at the Indooroopilly outreach hub in 2020. While B had work rights linked to his temporary bridging visa, his wife had no visa of her own. The family’s attempt to secure a permanent visa in Australia has left them in a highly precarious state of limbo for the past few years. B’s health was in decline, and this year he was hospitalised, leaving his family with no income.

How Communify helped

Our ASRA housing support worker, Donna, teamed up with a mental health support worker from World Wellness Group to provide a safety net for the family, providing financial support from the ASRA donation fund to help B’s family when he was taken ill.
