A's story
A and her family sought assistance at the ASRA outreach hub in Logan. A is a mother who is employed part-time with an NDIS service. Despite the extensive loss and trauma she experienced from fleeing her home country in the Middle East, A has been determined to independently establish a new life for her family in Australia, with no options to return to their home country available to them.
How it started
A’s husband has been unable to work due to complex health conditions, leaving A as the sole wage earner in the family while her son finishes his schooling. Their recent application for a permanent visa was rejected, which resulted in the family being placed on a short-term bridging visa with no work permissions. This meant that A was forced to leave her employment position, which left the family with no income to pay for food and rent. The family was facing eviction due to their inability to maintain rental payments, and this is when they were connected to the ASRA team.
How Communify helped
Our ASRA housing support worker, Donna, assisted A and her family to secure stable housing and access emergency support and health services through World Wellness Group and Red Cross. When Donna discovered that A had lost her work rights, she arranged for the ASRA program to provide financial support to ensure they could continue to escape homelessness and retain their dignity.
