Exhibition: Ground – Opening Night

Exhibition: Ground – Thinking and Feeling with the Earth

by Georgia Walsh, Man&Wah, Paula de la Rua Cordoba, Sean Williams

Ground is a word that is rich with subtleties and connotations. On a material level it can represent the soil or earth upon which we stand – the ground cultivates and nourishes life, the prepared surface of a support, or an electrical connection. It can speak of the performative action of grinding, of breaking a whole into smaller parts. Immaterially, it can represent the premise that underpins a belief or argument, the grounds upon which an idea rest. We gain ground, we reach common ground, we lay groundwork. A person who is grounded is thought to be in touch with themselves, emotionally and physically.

This diversity in meaning is reflected in the approach of each artist and their artforms. Working across different mediums and styles, each feel a distinct connection to the title, the works in this exhibition examine their personal connection to this sentiment. Despite the varied individual practices, the common thread that is shared throughout is a deep, lasting respect for the earth, and an interest in exploring the intrinsic connection of humans and the natural systems.

Many of the materials employed by the artists originate from within the earth – clay, sand, pigments and metals. The natural forms depicted, whether plant, animal, or human, are dependent on the earth materials manifested through the countless complex and interlaced natural systems. The works presented here interrogate these relationships between the natural and human worlds and raise questions around the impacts of humanity on this shared ecosystem.
