Before she became a regular at the community hub at Zillmere State School, mother of twelve, Eryn, believed she had “learnt all the cooking I could possibly know”. Cooking classes are just one of the many activities that foster connections with the local Torres Strait Islander community near the school. “Families and children that I wouldn’t necessarily have known; I would have gone past them day-to-day and wouldn’t even have noticed. Now, through our hub, it’s like ‘hey, there’s Lillian. There’s Mrs so-and-so.’ There’s that connection that when I was a child, we absolutely lived with, but somewhere along the lines it’s disconnected. It’s wonderful to have that connection back.”

Hear from members of our Community Hubs

Our Community Hubs based in schools in the Zillmere, Inala, Moorooka and Acacia Ridge districts create opportunities for refugee and migrant families to connect with their community, learn English and workforce skills, and enrol children in playgroups to prepare them for school. This year, over 250 families participated in the Hubs, with over 13,980 instances of children participating in hub activities.

Hear from some of our participating families about how the Hubs have given them more confidence to engage with their community and build their new lives.

It is incredibly reaffirming to receive such positive feedback from our participating family members who have found comfort and connection through our school-based community hubs.
